Abstract: Tolerance allocation is very important in optical design because it has the significant effects on the as-built performance of optical system. In this paper, we propose an improved tolerance allocation method that takes into account all the structural parameters of the optical system as well as the compensator. Sensitivity coefficients of all the structural parameters are calculated based on the compensator optimization, and tolerances are assigned by solving the constrained optimization problem for minimizing the manufacturing cost while satisfying the image quality. Finally, the as built performance of the Cooke triplet is predicted by Monte-Carlo simulation and the feasibility of this method is demonstrated.
