Political activism in India: The interplay of social movements, institutions, interests, and identities

Author(s): Bhupen Ghimirey

Abstract: Indian activists have helped set up the democratic government, helped to decide on new laws, and supported minority groups. To study how activism influences governmental policies, political parties, the courts, and the media, this research tracks the background of social movements, government and political influences, and ways in which people are organized around identity. To find out about current activism and previous movements, the research integrates a quantitative analysis of current groups with a qualitative review of the past. This work investigates how activism has an effect on political talk by analyzing class, caste, gender, regional, and religious identities. Research reveals that internet activism has transformed normal mobilization strategies so people can engage more, although it leads to issues such as algorithmic manipulation, fake news, and spying. In order to learn about the influences on activist movements, the research also examines important theories such as resource mobilization and political opportunity theories. Besides, the research points out updates in youth-oriented behaviors, small-area movements, and automated campaigning to offer clues regarding political participation in India. The research broadens the discussion in academia about the role of activism in government and policymaking. This study wants to increase the understanding of how political action changes, impacts the country’s institutions and laws, and affects citizens’ engagement in India by researching the latest matters and original methods. The findings point to a requirement for continuing research about the relationship between activism and improvements in democratic processes and society.
