The war over the iron throne: A feminist re-reading of Game of Thrones

Author(s): Rituparna Chakraborty

Abstract: The series Game of Thrones became phenomenal since the first time it was aired. The medieval settings, feudal feuds immediately attracted the audience. The candidness in depicting sexuality somehow challenges the norms of a patriarchal society. It is also true the way women are objectified especially in the brothels which were so common in all the seven kingdoms is highly objectionable. At the same time, the characters like Arya Stark is a tight slap on the face of patriarchal society. The bildung of Sansa Stark from a naïve, docile girl to a strong and powerful woman is really praiseworthy. This paper seeks to attempt a feminist re-reading of Game of Thrones.
