The Self, agency and the double consciousness in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi

Author(s): Manya Bhola and Shrutimita Mehta

Abstract: The identity of a sex-worker involves varied aspects involved in its functioning. As a social means of income, the profession has never and might never attain any respect, due to reasons obvious; but the fact that the women involved in it are stripped of respect and basic dignity is objectionable, bearing the fact that many women are forced into it. Despite all the mental, physical and even sexual tortures that many girls endure, they do not have the option of fighting back and voicing it out. Until recently, when the apex court of this country has given them some of the rights they deserve, even then a lot still needs to be done. Even though.
S.L. Bhansali’s award-winning visual narrative Gangubai Kathiawadi is based in 1960s, one discovers that the issues raised in the story remain perennial. Exploitation of sex-workers on many levels is still a common practice and not much is voiced about it. This research article is called “The Self, Agency and the Double Consciousness in Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi and it attempts to underline the protagonist’s experience of double consciousness, a term introduced by W.E.B. Du Bois. It shall be explored how the main character of the story lives a divided life, first as an educated daughter to a respectable family and second, as an instrument of forced prostitution.
