Abstract: Farming communities in India are the backbone of the country’s agrarian economy, yet they continue to grapple with deep-seated social and economic challenges. This study, Beyond the Harvest: Social and Economic Realities of Farming Communities in India, explores the multifaceted issues affecting rural agricultural households, including income instability, land ownership disparities, access to credit, and the impact of climate change. While government schemes and technological advancements have aimed to uplift rural livelihoods, persistent issues such as indebtedness, inadequate infrastructure, and limited market access continue to hinder progress. Social dimensions, including caste dynamics, gender roles, and migration patterns, further compound the vulnerabilities faced by these communities. Through a combination of field interviews, secondary data analysis, and policy reviews, this research highlights the lived realities of farmers across diverse regions of India. It also examines the gap between policy intentions and ground-level implementation, stressing the need for more inclusive and sustainable development strategies. The paper concludes by recommending holistic policy interventions that prioritize farmer education, community participation, and institutional reforms to ensure long-term socio-economic resilience. This work contributes to the growing discourse on rural transformation by placing farmers’ voices at the center of development narratives and emphasizing that agricultural sustainability must go hand in hand with social justice and economic empowerment.
