Economic aspirations and challenges of youth in the COVID and Post-COVID phase: A study with reference to slums of Noor Nagar Pahadi, New Delhi

Abstract: The study was conducted in Noor Nagar Pahadi, New Delhi, to understand the employment status of urban youth during the COVID and post-COVID period. The study reflects that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the employment status of urban youth and reveals that many employed youths were laid off due to the contraction of economic activities and the shutdown of markets. It is worth noting that the findings revealed that the income of youth had increased after the lockdown ended, as compared to the income level of pre-COVID and COVID times and credited to the sudden rise in market demand. The study also focused on the challenges faced by youth residing in slums, where access to employment opportunities is limited. The study suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has further impacted the issue which leading to an increase in unemployment and financial insecurity among urban youths. Furthermore, the study recommends creating a policy framework that addresses the issue by prioritizing the job creation and training programs for urban youth, particularly those living in slums. Overall, the study underscores the need for a concerted effort by governments, employers, and civil society to address the various challenges urban youth face in accessing employment opportunities, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
