Color: Its use according to season, size, figure and occasion in fashion
Author(s): Sunanda
Abstract: Via its ability to transmit political, sexual, and economic messages, color is a potent cultural language that has historically shown how humans interact to one another and the environment around us. This groundbreaking collection is the first to look at the social significance of color in ceremonial and popular attire, and how it has expressed acceptance and exclusion, tradition and defiance. This book shows how color in clothing can be as flexible, complex, and varied as color itself. Examples include the use of white in early feminism, the preference for black in post-war France, and the horrors of green clothing laced with arsenic. Each portion, which is divided into four thematic sections on solidarity, power, creativity, and desire, emphasizes the sometimes violent, emotive history of color in clothes across national, historical, and cultural borders. Underlying today's relaxed attitude to color lies a chromatic complexity that speaks of wars, migrations and economics. This paper explores the importance of color on fashion, use of color, focusing on the psychological and physiological effects of color, the relationship between color and culture, and the use of color according to figure, occasion and season.
