Impact of dairy farming on the economic empowerment of rural women in Haryana

Author(s): Abdul Quadir and Dr. Sanjay Onkar Ingole

Abstract:
contributing significantly to their financial independence, social status, and overall empowerment. The sector has provided women with consistent income-generating opportunities, allowing them to actively participate in household decision-making, improve their standard of living, and gain financial autonomy. This study explores the multifaceted impact of dairy farming on the economic empowerment of rural women in Haryana by analysing secondary data sources, including government reports, research papers, and case studies.
The research highlights the instrumental role of dairy cooperatives, self-help groups), and government initiatives such as the National Dairy Plan and Rashtriya Gokul Mission in encouraging women's participation in the dairy sector. These interventions have facilitated better access to credit, skill development programs, and market linkages, which are crucial in sustaining and expanding dairy farming enterprises.
Findings indicate that dairy farming enhances rural women’s entrepreneurial skills, financial literacy, and access to productive resources. Women dairy farmers report increased decision-making power in household finances, improved access to healthcare and education for their children, and greater social mobility. Additionally, participation in dairy cooperatives has enabled women to negotiate better prices for their produce, reducing their dependence on exploitative intermediaries.
However, despite its potential, dairy farming for rural women is fraught with challenges, including restricted access to financial resources, lack of training in advanced dairy techniques, market constraints, and socio-cultural barriers. Many women continue to struggle with gender-based discrimination, land ownership restrictions, and limited control over the profits generated from dairy activities.
The study concludes that addressing these challenges through policy interventions, improved financial inclusion, and training programs can significantly enhance the economic contributions of women in dairy farming. Strengthening women's role in the dairy sector not only promotes gender equity but also drives rural economic development. Future research should focus on the long-term sustainability of women-led dairy enterprises and the impact of digital technology in improving market access for rural women entrepreneurs.
