Job satisfaction and organizational commitment of library professionals working in colleges affiliated to Panjab University Chandigarh: A study

Abstract: Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the job satisfaction levels of librarians and library professionals employed in the libraries of colleges affiliated with Punjab University Chandigarh.
Design/Methodology: Descriptive research design is a method used in social science, psychology, marketing, and other fields to describe the characteristics, behaviors, attitudes, or opinions of a population or phenomenon. It focuses on observing and documenting what exists, rather than trying to manipulate variables or establish cause-and-effect relationships. In descriptive research, data is gathered by researchers using methods like surveys, interviews, observations, or analyzing existing data. The goal is to provide an accurate representation of the subject being studied without influencing it.
Findings: It can be concluded that most of the colleges have full-fledged working librarians. It is clear that the numbers of female library professionals working in the colleges are more as compared to male professionals. It is evident that the majorities of employees are content with their jobs and are dedicated to their respective organizations. The relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment is average, showing a medium link between the two variables in library professionals working in various types of universities. Library professionals working in government colleges have a very high correlation, indicating that they are extremely satisfied and committed to their organization. Professionals in government-aided colleges have a medium correlation, whereas those in private colleges have a low correlation. As a result, professionals in government colleges are the most satisfied, while those in private colleges are the least satisfied. Assistant Librarians are the most content and dedicated to their organizations, with library restorers coming in second with a medium correlation. The female professionals are less satisfied with their jobs than their male counterparts.
Implications: The research on "Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment of Library Professionals Working in Colleges" could have several implications, both for the field of library science and for organizational management in general such as identifying factors affecting job satisfaction, enhancing organizational commitment, retention and recruitment strategies, workplace interventions, employee well-being and Performance, policy and decision making.
