Bloodstain pattern documentation: Types, merits and limitations

Author(s): Mahua Deb and Aditya Kumar

Abstract: Bloodstain pattern evidence is useful in determination of events which may have happened when a violent crime occurred and when there was bloodshed involved. Visiting the crime scene and examining the patterns is the most effective way to assess bloodstain pattern evidence. However because frequent visitation to crime scene is not possible, the analyst must rely on the documentation of bloodstain patterns. Appropriate documentation of the pattern of bloodstain is significant as it helps in the event’s reconstruction and also for preservation of evidence for court presentations. Bloodstain pattern analysis can be crucial in reconstructing events at a crime scene and providing insight into some issues when DNA evidence is insufficient or unreliable (for instance, when it comes to suspects who had a legitimate reason to be present).
