Exploring the influence of school climate on moral values and academic achievement among students: A demographic analysis

Abstract: John Sloan Dickey gives a very definite, comprehensive view of education. The end of education is to see man made whole, both in competence and in conscience. For to create the power of competence without creating a corresponding direction to guide the use of that power is bad education. Furthermore, competence will finally disintegrate apart from conscience. Does the School Climate help to develop Moral Values among children? Hence, this study attempts to ascertain the influence of Organizational Climate on the prevalence of Moral Values and Academic Achievement among the Higher Secondary students in Chennai city. The present study belongs to Normative Survey research. In this study, Stratified Random Sampling Technique was followed and the data were collected from 1446 students in 20 schools. The variables used in the study were Organizational Climate, Moral Values, Academic Achievement, and demographic variables. The tools used in the study were a Situational test to measure Moral Values developed by the investigator. One Standardized Tools to measure Organizational Climate is known as the School Environment Inventory. First Terminal examination marks were taken as the Academic Achievement of the Students. Descriptive and inferential statistics, primarily the t-test, were applied to analyze differences across School Climate levels (high, moderate, low) in relation to gender, parental education, occupation, income, type of school management, type of school, and major subject groups. The Female students have better Moral Values and Academic Achievements than the Male students. Students of parents who own their Business were high in Moral Values in High School Climate. Students with Parent’s Monthly Income above Rs.25000 are high in Academic Achievement in High School Climate. Students studying in Aided School have High Moral Values in Moderate School Climate. The students studying in Government Schools have High Moral Values in Low School Climate. The students studying in the State Board have better moral values. The students of C.B.S.E. and Matriculation have better Academic Achievement. The Science Students have better Moral Values in Moderate and Low School Climate.
