Arya samaj gurukul schools in India: A socio-historical perspective

Abstract: The Arya Samaj movement emerged as a socio-religious movement in 19th century colonial India but later on engaged in educational work of considerable importance to address the shortcomings of colonial education gaining momentum at that time. The agenda of Arya Samaj's educational work started with establishing Dayanand Anglo Vedic (D.A.V.) schools but later on, this academic community was divided into two streams, one of which is called Gurukul stream. This stream is staunch and more traditional because they believe in the ideal of Vedic education. With this background,the focus of the present study is to understand the historical development of Arya Samaj Gurukul schools ((hereafter ASGS) in India.The objective of this paper revolves around two themes-first section discusses the origin of the Arya Samaj movement, its founding principles, religious ideals and aims. The second section of the paper is related to the socio-historical contexts which led to the emergence of ASGSin India. This section also analyzes the content and processes which are part and parcel of Gurukul school teachings like shuddhi work, concept of Sanskar, teaching content, the performance of Yajna and other related activities.
