Analysis of seed dormancy and salinity on germination of Citrullus colocynthis L.

Abstract: Citrullus colocynthis L. has been getting a lot of attention lately as a possible biofuel feedstock crop because it has a lot of seed oil (up to 50%). Some reports say that the seeds of this crop dormancy, which can make people not want to grow it commercially. This research looked at several different ways to break the dormancy of seeds before they are planted. The fact that Citrullus colocynthis grows as a weed in dry and semi-dry areas shows that it can handle dryness. Researchers looked into how well this crop could handle different amounts of salinity while it was sprouting in a lab. A method that works well to wake up dormant seeds was found, and germplasm from the area was tested for its ability to handle salty conditions.
