From tradition to technology: Preserving Assam’s manuscript legacy

Abstract: Digital preservation of manuscripts is now given proper importance. Manuscripts are the first hand-written documents that reflect our glorious past and tell the story of our forefathers. These manuscripts are the basic and primary source of information for the researchers. Due to different reasons, these manuscripts are now in poor and fragile physical conditions, and they need proper preservation at the present stage for the future. The paper discusses the traditional culture and digital preservation of manuscripts and their importance, as well as digital preservation requirements and initiatives in the digital preservation of manuscripts in Assam. It also reflects on the mechanism of digitalization of manuscripts. Further, the paper shows that permanence is a significant factor when preserving these rich resources; their loss would be irreparable and irreplaceable.
