The role of cooperatives in rural economic empowerment

Abstract: Cooperatives are formed to provide financial assistance to its members. The members are responsible for raising capital to help those in need. It mainly protects the weaker sections within rural communities from exploitation by wealthy individuals and companies. For a developing economy like India, a faster and more sustainable method of development is required to cater to the needs of its population. Cooperatives occupy an important place in India’s rural economy in terms of their coverage of rural population and their share in the total supply of agricultural inputs including credit and contribute significantly to rural development.
