The changing pattern of the Indian family structure: A review of the position of women
Author(s): Sujata Charan
Abstract: The Indian family structure has evolved and transformed with the advent of industrialization and globalization. What was once a compact and consolidated framework is now reduced to a nuclear formation, especially in the urban spaces? The New Indian Family is outwardly progressive, tolerant, and modern; it allows its women to seek a college education and work after marriage. The metropolitan family also includes working mothers, highly qualified wives, and single female parents. The following paper deals with the study of women's position, the practiced gender roles, gender identities, and women's agency in the space of the current family system.
