Digital dispersion in commerce management navigates strategic shifts

Abstract: Background: The rapid development of digital technology has resulted in a profound transformation of international commerce. In India, and more so, within Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), this move has taken shape in the form of digital dispersion— breaking down the commerce supply chain through platforms, tools, and cloud-based operations. Despite the national efforts to encourage the digital transformation, the uptake of digital systems by the MSMEs is still fragmented, thereby emphasising an area of concern for academics and policy.
Objectives: This research examines the impact of digital spread on commerce propagation in the MSME sector of Maharashtra. The aim is to scrutinise the strategic change processes caused by digital technologies, understand operational and infrastructural barriers, and determine how businesses and governance structures are coping with these challenges.
Methods: The study uses a qualitative-descriptive design with semi-structured interviews, policy document reviews, and fieldwork observation. We purposively sampled 48 MSMEs from a range of sectors to represent diversity in digital engagement. Inductive coding and themes were identified by the study team and triangulated across stakeholder narratives and policy context to enhance the robustness of the analysis.
Results: The results from the survey suggest that while simple digital tools and software such as UPI and digital payment gateways are widely accepted, deep integration with operational software such as CRM and inventory software is low. These barriers include poor digital literacy, infrastructures that are not unreliable infrastructure, and weak institutional facilitation. And second, even aware of national digital initiatives, many entrepreneurs are found to have low engagement with formal programs such as ONDC, mainly because of procedural and informational hurdles.
Conclusion: The paper concludes that digital dispersion holds great promise for transforming the management of commerce, provided it is complemented by inclusivity strategies for infrastructure, human capital, and related issues. Such a transition to ecosystem-based digital governance, based on accessibility, mentorship, and adaptability, is the key to sustainable transformation for MSMEs in emerging markets.
